THE AQUARIUM OF THE WORLD

Why Baja California

Jacques Cousteau famously called the Sea of Cortez “the aquarium of the world.” Located between the Baja Peninsula and mainland Mexico, these waters host one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth.

During the summer months, encounters may include:

• Orcas   • Mobula ray migrations   • Dolphins
• Sea lions   • Giant manta rays

Each day the expedition adapts based on real-time wildlife reports. This flexibility allows Poseidon Ascend to function as a true exploration expedition rather than a fixed tour.

ORCA DIVING IN BAJA

Freediving with Orcas in the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez is home to a resident population of orcas that hunt and socialise in the waters around La Ventana and Espiritu Santo during the summer months. Poseidon Ascend expeditions are timed to coincide with peak orca activity, giving guests the opportunity to encounter these animals in open water.

Since August 2025, Mexico’s SEMARNAT regulations have formally authorised swimming with orcas in the La Ventana zone under specific conditions — making this one of the few places in the world where in-water orca encounters are both legal and accessible. All Poseidon Ascend interactions are conducted in full compliance with these regulations, with safety and animal welfare as the first priority.

Orca encounters are never guaranteed — they are wild animals in open ocean. But when they happen, they are among the most extraordinary experiences available to any freediver or ocean explorer on Earth.

THE METHOD

The Poseidon Breath Method

Each morning begins with a 30–45 minute Poseidon Breath session with Tavi Castro. Most guests increase their breath hold from 1–2 minutes to 3–4 minutes or more within the week. The deeper benefit is learning how to remain calm under pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Baja Expedition

Yes. Since August 2025, Mexico’s SEMARNAT regulations have authorised in-water orca encounters in the La Ventana zone of Baja California Sur, under specific conditions. Swimming with orcas is permitted only when the animals are calm, socialising, or feeding on small prey. Poseidon Ascend operates in full compliance with these regulations. Encounters are never guaranteed, as orcas are wild animals, but the Sea of Cortez is one of the most reliable locations in the world for summer orca sightings.

Orca activity in the Sea of Cortez peaks between June and August, coinciding with mobula ray migrations that attract orcas to the La Ventana area. Poseidon Ascend expedition dates are specifically timed to align with this peak season. The 2026 expeditions run from late June through mid-July.

No. The expedition is designed for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced freedivers. Day 1 covers fundamentals including equalization, safety, and descent technique. Daily Poseidon Breath sessions prepare guests for open-water encounters. Most guests arrive with no freediving background and leave with the skills and confidence to dive comfortably in open ocean.

The Sea of Cortez hosts one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth. Possible encounters during the expedition include orcas, dolphins, mobula ray migrations (sometimes numbering in the thousands), sea lions, giant manta rays, whale sharks, and various pelagic species. Each day’s itinerary adapts based on real-time wildlife reports from local captains and spotters.

Poseidon Ascend Baja is structured as an ocean expedition with retreat-level comfort. The days are spent at sea — 5 to 7 hours of open-water exploration, freediving, and wildlife encounters. The evenings offer recovery, private chef dinners, beach fires, and optional massage therapy. It combines the intensity and adventure of an expedition with the accommodation, cuisine, and personal attention of a luxury Baja retreat.

Pricing details and inclusions are shared upon enquiry. Each expedition is limited to six guests. Contact us via WhatsApp or email to receive the full information package, including pricing, accommodation details, and what’s included.

The expedition includes 7 days and 6 nights of accommodation at Amina Wind Resort, daily Poseidon Breath sessions with Tavi Castro, all ocean safari expeditions, freediving instruction and equipment, private chef meals, airport transfers from La Paz, cinematic underwater content production, and a curated Poseidon Ascend gear package to keep.

Guests fly into La Paz International Airport (LAP) or Cabo San Lucas (SJD). Poseidon Ascend provides a private shuttle transfer to Amina Wind Resort in La Ventana. Travel time from La Paz is approximately 45 minutes. Detailed travel instructions are provided upon booking confirmation.
